The Rowegians are following a direct route from Canary Islands to Antigua which extends approx. between 28N 17W at departure and 17N 62W at arrival.
To the north of this latitude the Azores High is the main synoptic scale system that influences the weather along this voyage by its depth/strength. The general circulation on the southern part of this system, where the rowing takes place, is from an easterly-northeasterly direction.
As per the analysis of the weather between 2008 and 2016, during the months of December and January a route from Canary Islands to Antigua is generally characterized by wind speeds below 20 knots and wave heights below 3.0 meters. Therefore, the route ahead should be characterized by moderate following trade winds.
The ocean currents along this route are variable and longer routes to the south do not find more favorable currents at this time.
