StormGeo History

It all began with some young enthusiastic weather loving people who wanted to communicate their fascination of the weather and the forces of Mother Nature.

The birth place

StormGeo was established in Bergen, a city situated between seven mountains on the North Sea coast of Norway. The city is known for its rainy weather and for Vilhelm Bjerknes, one of the founders of modern meteorology and weather forecasting. StormGeo values the Bjerknes heritage and our goal is to continuously improve the forecast of the impact of the weather on everyday life and industry.

The cradle

StormGeo started as a spin-off of TV2, Norway"s largest commercial broadcaster. The TV2 broadcast changed the way in which weather programmes on TV were produced worldwide. In 1993, for the first time in history, we showed people the animated fronts and pressure system, thus giving the general public a better and more visualised view of the weather development.

The first step

StormGeo was founded in 1997 by meteorologist and TV presenter Siri Kalvig in collaboration with TV2. It had its official start in April 1998. The first customers were TV 2 and VG, the largest newspaper in Norway. But the weather forecast on TV 2 was not only viewed by the general public. It was also being closely monitored by energy traders, who used it as a tool for making important market decisions. In 1998, we created our first weather service for the growing hydroelectric power industry. And in the same year we expanded into a broader energy market - the oil and gas market - which relies strongly on accurate weather and sea forecasts to ensure safe operations.

Growing up

From the very beginning, StormGeo has addressed the fascination of the weather to the general public and we have communicated the impact it has on everyday life. We then expanded our vision about weather communication to include the professional markets. StormGeo forecasts the consequence of the weather on your business. How much energy will the precipitation produce and how will the oil rig respond to the state of the sea that we forecast for tomorrow? How much energy will a wind turbine produce? And where would be the optimal place to put a wind farm and an individual turbine? Since the start we have been focusing on our main sectors; Media, Offshore and Renewables.

The people

The StormGeo Group is proud to have some of the brightest minds in the industry, all creating and delivering quality. We started off with 5 young enthusiastic weather loving people and we are now over 70 co-workers inspiring each other to deliver quality and cutting-edge products.

The road ahead

In 2008, Idèkapital AS acquired a 42.5% stake in StormGeo and entered into a strategic partnership with TV2 Invest and Siri Kalvig. The focus is on internationalisation and we now have offices in Norway, Sweden, the UK and Denmark.

Growing: The number of employees is growing fast as the company expands.
